Crosshills Football Club has been part of the local community for more than 75 years, with a proud tradition of grassroots football at the heart of three closely connected villages: Crosshills, Glusburn, and Sutton.
Formed in the post-war years, with the help of Mr HE Winch, who was headmaster of Glusburn School, the Cross Hills Youth Club was founded, a forerunner to being named Crosshills FC. In its inaugural season, in 1949, the club joined the Second Division of the Craven League and played on a field near Sunny Bank Road. The pitch was known as Hill 60 because of a steep incline. By 1950, the club had an A and B team, and by the end of the season, the A team achieved promotion to the league's Premier Division.
The club quickly became a focal point for local sport and community spirit. From 1951 and for the next 48 years Crosshills had a team in the Craven League's top division. In the early years, the club had grounds at Walker Field (now Walker Close), Parks Field (where the club now plays), and a ground at what is now the South Craven School playing field. After a brief stint away from Parks Field because of a farmer using the ground to graze his sheep, the club returned there in 1961.
Generations of players have put on the Crosshills shirt, from schoolboys taking their first major steps into the game to more experienced footballers, all representing their club with pride. Over the decades, the club has grown, adapted, and remained a constant presence through changing times, providing a place where football is about more than just the match.
It has always been about teamwork, friendship, and belonging.
Today, Crosshills FC continues to honour that tradition, fielding two teams in the Craven & District League and giving players, supporters, and families a chance to share in our story.
We are proud of our past and excited to keep building our future, together with the community that has supported us every step of the way.
This year is our 75th Anniversary, the picture above is probably the first ever photo of the Crosshills team, known at the time as Crosshills Youth Club, a forerunner of today's club. The date on the ball is 1950. By the looks of it, they have had a successful season with 2 Trophies on display.
Meet some of the faces behind Crosshills FC: from our dedicated Chairman and committee members to our passionate coaches & captains, including many amazing volunteers, these are the people who make this club tick, ensuring every training session runs smoothly, every match day is ready, and every player or visitor feels welcome.
One figure who will always stand out is Barrie Pearce, who sadly passed away in 2022. A true ‘local legend’, Barrie was the Club’s long-standing Chairman for over 40 years, as well as a skilled former player. He was known and is still remembered as,
“A man of many talents and a true gentleman.”
Beyond the pitch, no task was ever too big or too small. Barrie dedicated himself tirelessly to the club, raising funds well into his seventies and even organising a sponsored tandem skydive with his son and grandson, a moment that perfectly captured how the Cross Hills spirit spans generations.
He will be forever missed and fondly remembered by everyone connected with the club.
